No one above law, says top Qatar official

No one, not even the ministers, are above the law in Qatar, says the Attorney-General, citing the example of four ministers who were grilled along with other top officials in a corruption case some four years ago and asked to quit.

Some of them were from the ruling family. This amply demonstrates that there is political will in the country to fight corruption at the highest level.

In other Arab countries, the political will to combat corruption is missing, said the Attorney-General, Dr Ali bin Futais Al Marri, in a programme titled ‘Without Boundaries’ aired by Al Jazeera Channel recently.

Iran refuses to ship uranium as wanted by UN

It just hit the news about an hour ago that Iran will not send any of its low grade uranium out of Iran to be enriched by a 3rd country....
Iran says that its uranium is for peaceful purposes, being the generation of domestic electricity.
Odd thing though,,,,Iran has no domestic nucleur reactors to produce domestic electricity.

New movie spares the Kaaba from destruction

"When I interviewed director Roland Emmerich a few months ago about his upcoming disaster flick "2012," the first question I asked was, "Why do you like killing the world?" His response: "It makes for a good story."

Over the past fifteen years, Emmerich has crafted some great tales about global doom, featuring some spectacular scenes of destruction. He had aliens zap the White House in "Independence Day," he let a massive lizard flatten New York City in "Godzilla," and he sent killer tornadoes through downtown Los Angeles in "The Day After Tomorrow."

Millions want to switch countries

"WASHINGTON (AFP) – Some 700 million people worldwide, or more than all the adults of North and South America combined, think the grass is greener on the other side of the fence and want to permanently move to another country, a poll showed Tuesday.
Residents of sub-Saharan African countries were the most likely to want to move abroad permanently, the polls conducted in 135 countries between 2007 and this year by Gallup showed.
On average, 38 percent of the adult population in sub-Saharan Africa, or around 165 million people, said they would up stakes and head for another country if they had the chance.
The most popular destination was the United States, where nearly a quarter of the 700 million -- around 165 million people -- said they would like to settle.

Qataris buy US Embassy building in London

The United States has agreed to sell its embassy building in Grosvenor Square, Mayfair, to Qatari Diar, the sovereign wealth-backed developer, for an undisclosed sum.

The US State Department said that it will sell the Chancery building, home to the US Embassy in Britain for almost half a century, to the property investment company owned by the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA).

The building was worth an estimated £500 million at the peak of the market in July 2007 when Qatari Diar was first linked with a possible purchase. However, the building is now thought to be worth less after a 45 per cent decline in commercial property values.
