Swedish tourists miss island due to GPS typo

Officials say a Swedish couple looking for the pristine waters of the popular island of Capri ended some 400 miles (660 kilometers) away in the northern industrial town of Carpi after misspelling the destination on their car's GPS.

Angelo Giovannini, a spokesman for the Carpi town hall, near Modena, said Tuesday the couple drove into the main square last week and asked the local tourist office how to reach Capri's famed Blue Grotto sea cave.

Giovannini said "we thought they might mean a restaurant. Capri is an island, they did not even wonder why they didn't cross any bridge or take any boat."

He said the couple, who were not identified, arrived from Venice and later set off to their planned destination at the other end of the Italian peninsula.

The Dull Faces in a Villagio called Doha

One can only feel sorry for the poor guys that are driving the gondolas, up and down the fake water channel in the Villagio Shopping Mall.
Most of the people walk around the mall and even take the gondolas’ rides without noticing that these guys are real human beings guiding these gondolas.
If you stop and observe these guys’ faces, you will unhappiness, emptiness, boredom and almost pain. They look like they are being tortured or they are serving a life sentence with no hope of escape.
And who is to blame them, when they probably have one of the most boring jobs in that mall. There is simply no interaction between them and the fake world the surround them during their shift (I just hope that for their sanity, it’s a very short one).

Jeremy Clarkson’s latest column in the Sunday

Jeremy Clarkson’s latest column in the Sunday Times in England.

I had to share.

"I dare you to visit Johannesburg, the city for softies
It’s the least frightening place on earth, yet everyone speaks of how many times they’ve been killed that day"
Jeremy Clarkson

Every city needs a snappy one-word handle to pull in the tourists and the investors. So, when you think of Paris, you think of love; when you think of New York, you think of shopping; and when you think of London – despite the best efforts of new Labour to steer you in the direction of Darcus Howe – you think of beefeaters and Mrs Queen.

World's Strangest Laws

World's Strangest Laws
Driving shirtless, strolling in your swimsuit, or just forgetting to flush the loo: Here are some odd laws that can get you in trouble around the world
By Katrina Brown Hunt

No Feeding Pigeons
Italy

Laws here are city-specific, and Venice takes issues with pigeons speckling their beloved buildings with pigeon poop. Likewise, officials don’t appreciate tourists adding to the crowd and mess in St. Marks Square by feeding said pigeons. They also don’t want visitors sitting around shirtless, climbing into fountains, or even sitting on the sidewalk eating a sandwich. In Rome, climbing into fountains to cool off causes similar stress.

Chrch sez stop txtn 4 lent !

Or, put another way, the Italian Church wants its followers to forswear text messaging, social networking websites and computer games in the run-up to Easter.

....Perhaps we need to give up QL for lent also .................................

While many Italians traditionally give up fatty foods or, in extremis, alcohol, the appeal to go without some of the trappings of the modern world, including Facebook, iPhones and computer games, on Fridays – and on other days if possible – is unprecedented.

It appears to stem partly from Pope Benedict XVI's recent warning to the young not to substitute "virtual friendship" for real human relationships.

Harassment in foreign lands can be a culture

Just one kiss, he says, waving five Egyptian pounds at me.

One kiss on the mouth, and he’ll give me the equivalent of a dollar. I am walking through a bazaar bordering the Islamic section of Cairo, Egypt, when I realize that sexual harassment has no limits here.

One says he wants to marry me. Another grabs me by the arm and asks my name. A few simply yell, “China,” and hope I’ll turn around — I’m Asian, but not Chinese.

Harassment in Italy is notorious. But the catcalls I experienced in Venice and Rome pale in comparison to the shockingly sexual statements and shameless groping my roommate and I endured in Egypt.
