Scandal-ridden Companies Hurriedly Creating Pandemic Vaccine

Extensive analysis of the swine flu virus revealed that it contained the original 1918 H1N1 flu virus, the avian (bird) flu virus and 2 new H3N2 virus genes from Eurasia, meaning that it had to be genetically created in a laboratory.

Both Baxter Pharmaceuticals and Novartis Pharmaceuticals -- recently acquired from scandal-ridden Chiron vaccine company -- have agreements with the WHO to come up with a pandemic vaccine.

As Internet turns 40, barriers threaten its growth

NEW YORK - Goofy videos weren't on the minds of Len Kleinrock and his team at UCLA when they began tests 40 years ago on what would become the Internet. Neither was social networking, for that matter, nor were most of the other easy-to-use applications that have drawn more than a billion people online.

Instead the researchers sought to create an open network for freely exchanging information, an openness that ultimately spurred the innovation that would later spawn the likes of YouTube, Facebook and the World Wide Web.

There's still plenty of room for innovation today, yet the openness fostering it may be eroding. While the Internet is more widely available and faster than ever, artificial barriers threaten to constrict its growth.

Call it a mid-life crisis.

Swiss bank is set to open its secret files

By Lynnley Browning Published: February 19, 2009

In the hush-hush world of Swiss banking, the unthinkable is happening: secrets are spilling into the open.

UBS, the largest bank in Switzerland, agreed on Wednesday to divulge the names of well-heeled Americans whom the authorities suspect of using offshore accounts at the bank to evade taxes. The bank admitted conspiring to defraud the Internal Revenue Service and agreed to pay $780 million to settle a sweeping U.S. government investigation into its activities.

It is unclear how many of its clients' names UBS will divulge. U.S. government prosecutors have been examining about 19,000 accounts at the bank, but UBS ultimately may disclose the identities of only a few hundred customers.

Washington Too Concerned With al Qaeda Terrorists to Care, Officials Say

By BRIAN ROSS, RICHARD ESPOSITO and ASA ESLOCKER
February 11, 2009

In what officials caution is now a dangerous and even deadly crime wave, Phoenix, Arizona has become the kidnapping capital of America, with more incidents than any other city in the world outside of Mexico City and over 370 cases last year alone. But local authorities say Washington, DC is too obsessed with al Qaeda terrorists to care about what is happening in their own backyard right now.
