Plans for the new animal shelter: a far more efficient and impressive facility
Qatar Animal Welfare Society (QAWS) is looking forward to rising like a Phoenix from the ashes when they begin building work on their new state-of-the-art animal shelter soon.
The group, which lost their shelter in a fire last September, has been offered assistance by UAE-based architects Hamilton, who have designed the new shelter on a pro bono basis.
Yesterday, Hamilton officials met QAWS representatives to discuss the future of the shelter and the concept behind the plans for the new facility.
Although the project’s cost is unknown yet, it has been estimated at around QR10mn.
Any idea where to get tickets for this match?
Looking forward to a ‘great match’
By Peter Townson
The England versus Brazil football match which is scheduled to take place in Doha on November 14, offers the opportunity for Qatar to prove its sporting excellence and strengthen its bid for the 2022 World Cup bid, according to British Ambassador John Hawkins.
He added that the match would further develop bilateral relations between the UK and Qatar, and will also give the English fans the chance to promote the hosting of the World Cup in England in 2018.
“We were delighted to hear about the match from the very beginning,” said Hawkins, adding that he was expecting around 2,000 fans from England to visit for the match, along with several thousand from around the Gulf.

"Following the tragic fire which took place last Thursday at the Qatar Animal Welfare Society (QAWS), the group has been inundated with offers of assistance, not only from within Qatar, but from other countries around the world as well.
After losing their entire shelter in the fire, the group has been desperately trying to deal with the ensuing problems as quickly as possible.
And although they were aware of a large community following, even they have been left shocked and in awe of the “incredible response” the accident has drawn.
A cool campaign for workers
By Khanan on Sun, 28/06/2009 - 8:06amBy Peter Townson
Members of an online community volunteer group began a campaign yesterday to distribute cold drinks and other items to protect labourers working outdoors from the summer heat.
After being suggested by a member of the Qatar Living Volunteer Group, ‘Pitstop,’ the campaign began with a collection session on Thursday afternoon, where group members received an overwhelming response from charitable members of the Doha community.
And yesterday, members distributed some of the items throughout Doha, claiming to have given items to around 1,000 labourers during their drive.

By arnott_cs on Wed, 06/05/2009 - 8:34amTribunal decision on Abu Dhabi player today

Doha: A representative from Doha Rugby Football Centre (DRFC) is today travelling to Dubai to participate in an Arabian Gulf Rugby Football Union (AGRFU) appeals tribunal which may determine the destination for this year’s league trophy.
Doha, who finished their season with a home victory over Dubai Dragons last weekend, have launched an appeal against a decision handed down by the AGRFU on the eligibility of an Abu Dhabi Harlequins player who took part in their match against Doha on April 24, which Quins won by 34-10.

Coming to rescue of stray animals
By Peter Townson
Qatar Animal Welfare Society, which is nearing its fifth year of existence, is busier than ever, with no sign of a let-up in the number of stray animals being reported, making it “imperative” that it is awarded charity status.
Last month the number of dogs in the kennels reached 59, and along with the 55 cats and kittens at the farm, the amount of space and work required to look after the various animals is becoming too much for the volunteer organisation to handle.

Its about time the animals got some attention
By Rhodesian on Wed, 18/02/2009 - 8:54amExpert unveils steps to promote animal welfare - By Peter Townson
THE condition of pet animals in Qatar and possible changes to improve animal welfare will be investigated by a visiting expert over the next week.
Dr Safwat Ali Hassan will examine local clinics, pet shops and other animal organisations during his stay.
Dr Hassan, who is a German-based veterinarian of Egyptian origin, has been invited by the Qatari government to conduct the investigation.
Yesterday he gave a lecture at the Ministry of Agriculture on the subject of pets in society.
He also put forward a proposal for a national “Qatar Veterinary Centre” which he described as a necessary development for animal welfare in the country.
