Latest news from Qatar
satellite TV
Hello all, I will be arriving in Doha in June and was wondering about satellite television services in Qatar. I'm especially interested in getting Australia Network. AN is currently available across Asia but I'm not sure about the Middle East.
If AN is not available, can someone suggest an alternative option for receiving Australian sporting telecasts, specifically AFL and cricket?
Much obliged.

Breaking news - Ban on illegal TV decoders un
By thgloj on Thu, 16/04/2009 - 8:01amI wonder is this the result of recent QL poll....
The government has undertaken a study on the technical and legal aspects of banning illegal set-top units (decoders) in Qatar.
The interagency collaboration, involving the Ministry of Business and Trade, Customs Authority and service providers, aims to explore how to curb, what it calls an “upsurge” in the illegal utility.
“We couldn’t just do it on our own, without the involvement of other parties. Once the study is prepared then we will announce a way forward,” Ministry of Business and Trade’s Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Office head Abdulla Ahmed Qayed told Gulf Times.
Coming to Doha for a week or maybe two to look for a job and attend several interviews, I found out that there was an alternative to expensive hotels.

I needed my own clean room with Wifi to search and satellite TV to unwind. There was even a small pool! A large kitchen and my own fridge meant I could keep expenses down and cook for myself. The room was cleaned twice a week. Quick to town and loads of restaurants nearby. All in all a very pleasant experience. QR 2,500 per week for a huge ensuite. And I got the job!

Why Vodafone would win the fight against Qtel
By user_qatar on Wed, 01/04/2009 - 9:06pmI consider Qtel to be one of the worst telecommunications service provider, if not in the world, at least in the entire Middle East region. In spite of making record profits by monopolizing the telecommunications sector in Qatar for over a period of 15 years, it's a fact they haven't done much to improve their services in Qatar. I’m sure, like me, there must be more than a hundred thousand customers of Qtel who are completely disgusted with their products and services.
I asked this question to several people as I was visiting Qatar for 2 weeks at a time on a regular basis and the hotels were costing me a fortune.
And them I chanced upon this ad and visited the villa.
It's well located off TV round-about and it is run by a German woman who is very nice.
The rooms are huge and though simple, everything is there from free WIFi to satellite TV. Kitchen is free to use and there is even a guest fridge.
There's a small pool but I didn't have the rime to use it.
All in all, a great alternative to over-priced hotels.

If Al Jazeera did not exist...
By William Boot on Mon, 09/02/2009 - 3:39pmThis is the complete text of DCMF's report on press freedom in Qatar. It is not good reading for those who claim there is freedom of the press in this country.
In 1996, Qatar launched the first Arabic-language
rolling-news satellite TV station, Al Jazeera, which
has revolutionised the regional media scene and stirred up
controversy, though it has not really changed the media
freedom situation in Qatar itself.

Hi All,
I wanted some advice on how to go about getting satellite TV installed and the best one to go for and where to go to get it.
The family and myself came over from the UK about 2 months ago. I miss Premier League footie and the kids miss Cbeebies.
My wife enjoys watching Star Plus )an Indian channel) and someone mentioned TATA SKY to her but I'm not sure how you would get a Indian based satellite broadcaster here in Doha.
I'm stayed at the Movenpick in West Bay and they seemed to have Star Plus so I'm sure its possible just don't know how!
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks
