Dubai builds, but they don’t come

09:52 September 16th, 2009

There is something surreal about the financial crisis that has engulfed Dubai.

A small desert emirate, without significant hydrocarbon reserves, Dubai finds itself geared to the eyebrows in the midst of a global downturn. Deutsche Bank estimates its external debts at about $74.3 billion. That, for the record, is 107 percent of the emirate’s expected 2009 GDP, or more than 14 times its government revenues for 2006 (the latest year for which data is available).

But it isn’t just the extreme leverage that is surreal. Dubai has long borrowed heavily to invest. The real twist comes from the wacky way that Dubai has chosen to invest its borrowed cash.

'Iraq's dried marshes cause dust cover'

Dubai: The layer of dust blanketing the Arabian Peninsula and the UAE, originating from Iraq, could be more specifically coming from the country's drying marshes once fringed by a fifth of the world's palm trees and consequently drained by then president Saddam Hussain, a scientist has said.

Iraqi professor of physics, Dr Mohammad Akef Jamal believes the dried up marshes of southern Iraq is one of many man-made disasters that hit Iraq, which was once the region's most fertile area.

Qatar initiate to scrap the sponsorship system

Qatar will be the second Arabian Gulf nation to initiate scrapping sponsorship system, the Qatar Prime Minister, Shaikh Hamad bin Jasem bin Jabr Al Thani, said.

The scrapping of sponsorship system has been the subject of study for a long time, said Shaikh Hamad.

An ad-hoc committee has been established to look into this issue such that it does not harm foreign workers or citizens in assuming their responsibilities towards the sponsorship system, he said.

Commending Bahrain’s act of scrapping the sponsorship system, Sheikh Hamad said that Qatar is also studying the Bahraini law, so that appropriate decision can be take.
