Emir issues amendments to rent law
By nicaq25 on Mon, 26/10/2009 - 8:01amDOHA: The rent law has been amended making eviction of a tenant from a rented property more difficult.
A landlord can now ask a tenant to vacate a property only if it is needed for his/her personal use or for the use of any of his legal dependents. However, the landlord should serve a notice to the tenant at least six months in advance.
The Emir H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani issued Law No. (20) of 2009, amending some provisions of the law No. (4) of 2008 on properties rent.
Contrary to anticipations, the amendments do not give landlords the right to raise rentals.
The amendments were adopted after reviewing the draft law proposed by the Cabinet, considering the views of the Advisory Council and reviewing the Constitution and related laws.

By genesis on Wed, 16/09/2009 - 6:54pmAnyone still remembers the Doha center of Media Freedom?
After the Menard Controversy, the center went in a hibernation state until all of a sudden local newspapers today reports the DCMF will host Muntadhar al-Zeidi, the television reporter jailed for throwing his shoes at George Bush as announced by Maryam Alkhater the center's new Deputy Director General who assumed her office recently.
So far the site is under maintenance!!!

I can't help but wonder whether that will have any impact on local press specially with the Advisory council call for more restriction on freedom of press.

By Arabian73 on Wed, 01/07/2009 - 1:48amQatar Advisory Council calls for new press law
The Advisory Council has called for issuing a new press law that can keep pace with the current and future developments in Qatar.
The Council, which was debating a petition made by a 24-member of the body about the “Responsible media freedom” has also sought the questioning of journalists trying to distort the image of Qatar and taking legal measures against them.
The session, which was held on Monday and chaired by the Advisory Council Speaker HE Mohamed bin Mubarak al-Khalifa, has endorsed the recommendations submitted by the Cultural and Media Committee at the Council on the topic of discussion and referred them to the Cabinet.
Advisory Council calls for journalists punish
By genesis on Fri, 12/06/2009 - 12:12pmA surprising debate took place last Tuesday at Qatar Advisory council calling for stringent punishment to be given to Qatar-based journalists who write against the ruler, national security, religion and the Constitution.
Khalid Abdul Rahim Al Sayed (the peninsula) questioned the proceeding on his editorial yesterday
"The Emir, His Highness, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, declared the media free in the country in 1995 and with the launch of Al Jazeera, we have shown the world that Qatar is a country which allows different opinions to be heard.
Advisory panel meeting discuss media freedom
By nicaq25 on Wed, 10/06/2009 - 7:34amMedia freedom in Qatar was the subject of a heated debate during the scheduled weekly session of the Advisory Council on Monday, according to the local Arabic press.
Initiated on the request of 24 members, the focus of the debate was on the council’s report on the issue of media freedom in the country.
It was pointed out that some people had been “bought” in to write slanted reports and analyses against Qatar and its achievements. Their reports lack “accuracy and honesty of statement”.
....“We are not against media freedom but there are some red lines that should not be crossed. Those who dare to do so should be punished severely,” said another member Khalid Rashed al-Labda.

Ministry told to control price rise
Several members of the Advisory Council and government officials have expressed the fear that the recently formulated law on human resources development will not benefit government employees if the prices of commodities and the general cost of living keep rising, says a report published in a local Arabic daily.
The new law provides for a tangible rise in pay scales and allowances for government employees as an incentive to improve the quality of work in the government departments.
The decision to increase the pay scales was taken after large scale representations from the government employees.

By Nour Abuzant
The Advisory Council yesterday approved a proposal allowing landlords the right to demand the eviction of tenants “in case they needed the premises for themselves or for their kin.”
The proposal will be discussed now by the Cabinet.
Earlier, the council’s legal and legislative committee convened three times to discuss the proposal and the Minister of state for cabinet affairs, HE Sheikh Nasser bin Mohamed bin Abdulaziz al-Thani attended one of the meetings. Sources said the minister “supported” the draft saying the rent law of 2008 did not tackle the issue because there was an acute shortage of premises at that time.
