WITNESS: Failed state? Try Pakistan's M2 motorway

By Alistair Scrutton

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - If you want a slice of peace and stability in a country with a reputation for violence and chaos, try Pakistan's M2 motorway.

At times foreign reporters need to a give a nation a rest from their instinctive cynicism. I feel like that with Pakistan each time I whizz along the M2 between Islamabad and Lahore, the only motorway I know that inspires me to write.

Now, if the M2 conjures images of bland, spotless tarmac interspersed with gas stations and fast food outlets, you would be right. But this is South Asia, land of potholes, reckless driving and the occasional invasion of livestock.

And this is Pakistan, for many a "failed state." Here, blandness can inspire almost heady optimism.

Joke ..... Pope on the dying bed

The old and frail Pope lay dying in the hospital. For years he had faithfully served the people of the world. He motioned for his nurse to come near. "Yes, Father?" said the nurse. "I would really like to see Asif Zardari and Nawaz Sharif before I die,” whispered the priest.

"I'll see what I can do, Father," replied the nurse. The nurse sent the request to them and waited for a response. Soon the word arrived. Zardari and Nawaz Sharif would be delighted to visit the Pope.

As they went to the hospital, Nawaz commented to Zardari "I don't know why the old man wants to see us, but it will certainly help our images."

Monday, March 23, 2009
Monitoring Report

WASHINGTON: The prestigious Foreign Policy magazine has issued a list of world’s top 13 losers and President Asif Ali Zardari of Pakistan figures in the top five on the list.

The magazine said the 13 choices for this month ranked by just how little sympathy we should have for them.

Placing Asif Ali Zardari at No 5, the magazine said: “Zardari was known to be a bad guy long before he became Pakistan’s president.

Many of the closest friends of his late wife, Benazir Bhutto, could not stand him. Now, as it turns out, neither can most of the Pakistani people.
