With ongoing instability in nearby countries, it comes as no surprise that residents in Qatar feel anxious about a potential crisis. However, it's important to stay informed, avoid unnecessary panic, and be prepared just in case. Here’s what everyone in Qatar should know and be aware of.
Stick to verified news sources
During moments of crisis or tension, misinformation spreads fast. Make sure you’re only following official updates from government sources such as :
- Ministry of Interior (MOI) - @moi_qatar
- Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) - @mofa.qatar
- Ministry of Environment & Climate Change (MOECC) - @moecc_qatar
- Ministry of Public Health - Qatar (MOPH) - @mophqatar
- Qatar News Agency (QNA) - @qnaphoto
Avoid falling for viral WhatsApp messages, panic-ridden social media posts, or unverified blogs. Check for blue checkmarks indicating verified accounts.
Don’t panic – but be practical
Qatar’s government has robust systems in place for national security. Unless you receive official advice, there’s no need to make sudden decisions.
Don’t :
- Panic-buy food, water and fuel
- Book emergency flights unless instructed
- Share unverified information
Do :
- Stay updated frequently.
- Talk to children calmly and make them aware.
- Focus on your daily routine to minimise anxiety
Prepare for emergencies
Consider creating an emergency kit. Here’s a basic checklist to keep at home.
- long-lasting and energy-rich food items.
- Make a folder with important documents.
- Recharge devices and be ready with a flashlight, batteries, and power banks
- Stock up on basic medical supplies and baby formulas
- Always keep cash in hand
What to do if the situation escalates
While it may be highly unlikely, but if the situation changes, it is best to know what you next steps should be and how you should act.
- Know the location of your embassy
- Download offline maps in case GPS gets disabled.
- Keep emergency numbers handy, especially 999 and your embassy hotline
Be mindful of misinformation
Always remember that not everything you see online is true. Be thoughtful of the information you come across and make sure to verify through reliable sources. Limit your exposure to sensationalised content that you may see in social media.
