Qatar Museums Authority (QMA) has announced the inclusion of Barzan Towers—Qatar’s most significant surviving historical defence towers—and the Murwab Archaeological Site, a rare example of early Islamic Abbasid-era architecture, in the Arab Register of Architectural and Urban Heritage.
The Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) confirmed the listing during the 10th Meeting of the Observatory of Architectural and Urban Heritage, held in Beirut, Lebanon, from July 29–31, 2025.
This recognition underscores Qatar’s commitment to preserving its cultural legacy and promoting awareness of its archaeological sites regionally and internationally. It also builds on previous milestones, such as the 2019 listing of the Old Palace and Al Ruwais Mosque.
The announcement coincides with QMA’s 20th anniversary, marked by Evolution Nation—an 18-month campaign curated by Qatar Creates to celebrate five decades of cultural progress and Qatar’s aspirations as a global hub for art, heritage, and creativity.
