Doha Municipality, on the occasion of the World Day to Combat Desertification, announced the success of the first phase of its project to combat desertification and enhance the urban landscape in Doha.

The initiative, a part of the ‘Let’s Make It More Beautiful’ campaign launched at the start of 2024, aims to eliminate barren areas and reduce desertification by planting vegetation in urban spaces, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals that include halting land degradation and combating desertification.

The campaign targets elimination of barren, desert-like areas within Doha by increasing vegetation cover across urban spaces. The initiative focuses on planting native and drought-resistant flora to reduce the spread of desertification while improving the overall landscape of the capital.

The first phase saw the successful planting of more than 110,000 seedlings of wind-resistant and arid-climate-adapted plants across 15,000 linear meters in key locations, including Airport Road, University Street, and the Najma district.

The efforts incorporated sustainable landscaping techniques designed to be compatible with Qatar’s unique environmental conditions, ensuring long-term impact and resilience.

The second phase of the project is now underway. It involves the establishment of green windbreak fences along several major roads—such as Al Messila Street, Arab League Street, Al Khafji Street, and the entrance to 974 Beach — covering an additional 10,000M. Preparatory work has also been completed on adjacent land to facilitate further planting of green barriers. The project will be implemented in four phases through 2030, with the ultimate goal of completely eliminating desert landscapes within Doha.
