Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is set to depart US President Donald Trump’s administration and leave his role as a special government employee.

This came after he spent 130 days in his role at the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

“As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President Donald Trump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,” he wrote on his social media platform X.

“The DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government,” he added.

Musk's 130-day mandate as a special government employee in the Trump administration was set to expire around May 30.

Earlier, in an interview with the Washington Post on May 27, Elon Musk had expressed frustration that DOGE had become a scapegoat for criticism.

“DOGE is just becoming the whipping boy for everything. Whenever something goes wrong anywhere, we get blamed even if we’ve nothing to do with it,” he had said.

Hours after announcing his departure, Elon Musk posted on X saying that Tesla will deliver the first unit of its driverless Model Y cars in June 2025 — a month ahead of schedule. The vehicles are being tested in Austin, Texas.

Earlier this year, Elon Musk had said the launch would have 10 to 20 Model Y units, and test would begin by June-end.
