It’s time to bid adieu to the winter season in Qatar as Wednesday, March 20, marks the official start of spring season in the country and the rest of the Northern Hemisphere, said the Qatar Meteorology Department (QMD).

In a social media post, the QMD said that astronomically, winter ends on Wednesday, and spring begins. The sun will be perpendicular to the equator, meaning the length of day and night will be equal.

The QMD said the weather would gradually start getting warmer, coinciding with the gradual increase in daylight hours, until summer solstice towards the end of June.

During the spring equinox, the sun shines directly on the equator with nearly equal amounts of day and night. Throughout the world, the Northern and Southern hemispheres will get equal amounts of daylight. But in the Southern Hemisphere, it is the beginning of the autumn season.

The term ‘equinox’ originates in Latin, combining two words that mean ‘equal’ and ‘night.’ During the equinox, day and night are nearly equal in duration, although slight variations may occur based on geographical location.
