Qatar is set to field a powerful team of 12 athletes at the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, which will run from September 13 to 21.

Leading the squad will be star high jumper Mutaz Essa Barshim, a three-time world champion (London 2017, Doha 2019, Eugene 2022) and Olympic gold medalist.

Known for his astonishing leap of 2.43M — one of the highest in history — Barshim will be aiming for his fourth world title. After missing much of the season to recover from a minor injury, he is now fully focused on reclaiming the top of the podium in Tokyo.

Another major Qatari medal hope is Abderrahman Samba, bronze medalist in 400M hurdles at the 2019 World Championships in Doha. Samba, who has returned strongly this season, finished second at the Zurich Diamond League Final behind world record holder Karsten Warholm — evidence of his top form heading into Tokyo.

Qatar’s lineup also includes Bassem Hemeida, the reigning Asian champion in 400M hurdles, who continues to grow in international stature. Alongside him, Ismail Doudai Abakar will strengthen Qatar’s challenge in hurdles and relay events.

In the sprints, Ammar Ismail Yahia Ibrahim will compete in the 400M, having posted a season-best of 44.90sec. He is also part of Qatar’s men’s 4x400m relay team, which features Dawood, Hemeida, and Ashraf Hussein — a quartet looking to push for a place on the podium after consistent performances throughout the year.

Qatar’s middle-distance hopes rest on Ibrahim Zakaria in 800M, while the pole vault challenge comes from Saif Mohammed, one of the nation’s most promising young athletes. Completing the team are Khalid Hussein, Abdulaziz Youssef, and Ahmed Haroun, who will add depth across sprint and relay disciplines.

The World Athletics Championships are expected to bring together over 2,000 athletes from more than 200 nations, making it one of the most competitive track-and-field events in history.

With a mix of proven global champions and rising stars, Qatar’s 12-member squad will look to make a strong impact on the world stage, combining experience, talent, and determination to bring home medals from Tokyo.
