Qatar’s healthcare system is one of the best in the world and it won huge praise for the way it effectively handled the Covid-19 pandemic within the country.

Qatar’s position as a leading healthcare player got another shot in the arm when the country was elected as President of the Executive Board of the World Health Organization (WHO) for a one-year period during its 153rd session in Geneva.

The election was an acknowledgement by WHO’s Member States of the leading role Qatar plays at the international level and its strong support to WHO in helping promote health and wellness for all.

Qatar’s Minister of Public Health Dr Hanan Mohammed Al Kuwari expressed her appreciation to WHO’s Member States for their trust.

“I appreciate the confidence they’ve shown in electing Qatar as Chair of the Executive Board. We’ll work closely with them, as well as WHO’s governing bodies, to implement WHO’s goals and achieve universal health coverage,” she said.

The two-day meetings of WHO’s Executive Board, held in Geneva, discussed a number of important topics including decisions of the 76th World Health Assembly, and the Committee’s report on health emergency prevention and preparedness and response.

It also touched upon topics related to enhancing the organization’s efficiency and effectiveness in providing countries with better support, as well as improving the budgetary, programmatic and financial governance of WHO.

The main functions of WHO’s Board are to implement the Health Assembly’s decisions and policies, and to advise and generally facilitate its work.

The Board, composed of 34 members who are technically qualified in the field of health, meet at least twice a year.
