The Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has been doing yeoman’s work in assisting people in need, at places hit by either natural calamity or war.

On Monday, QRCS announced the allocation of $1m for urgent relief work and to improve humanitarian conditions in war-torn Sudan.

The aid, which will be distributed in cooperation with the Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS) and Sudanese Ministry of Health, will benefit over 119,000 people belonging to 17,000 families.

QRCS said it will implement a six-month urgent intervention in the fields of health, nutrition, water, sanitation and shelter, in addition to non-food relief items. It said a plane carrying 22 tons of urgent humanitarian aid — including food and medical equipment — had arrived at Port Sudan Airport from Doha.

Qatar’s Ambassador to Sudan Mohamed bin Ibrahim Al Sada, QRCS’ Director of Relief and International Development Sector Dr Mohamed Salah Ibrahim and the SRCS president received the plane.

QRCS continued to provide assistance to those in need in Sudan for the third day in a row, distributing food baskets to people in Gezira, two shelters housing displaced people from Rifa’a and five shelters in the city of Al Hasaheisa.

The assistance supported around 650 people, from 95 families, in these centers.

Earlier, the QRCS had sprung into action by sending millions of Dollars as aid to earthquake-ravaged Turkey. They had also sent trained professionals and doctors to co-ordinate search and rescue operations.

A second batch of doctors left for Syria to perform complex surgeries on people affected by the quake.

However, the search and rescue operations in Turkey and Syria came at a human cost. Four QRCS workers lost their lives during the operations.

The country wholeheartedly embraced the relief work, with thousands of people generously donating to the cause. Qatar’s Aoun Wa Sanad earthquake relief campaign managed to collect over QR168 million in a single day.
