Qatar’s Ministry of Transport (MoT) has officially launched Karwa electric robotaxis in Doha, making the Qatari capital one of the first in the region to introduce advanced autonomous vehicle technology.

According to the Government Communications Office (GCO), the initiative reflects Qatar’s commitment to innovation, safety, and sustainability in public transport.

Aligned with Qatar National Vision 2030, the project leverages the country’s world-class infrastructure and extensive 5G coverage to advance smart city solutions while adhering to the highest international safety standards.

In June, the MoT announced plans to supervise a pilot run with Mowasalat (Karwa), testing level-4 electric robotaxis along selected tourist and service routes. The trials will unfold in two phases: initially, supervised operations without passengers, followed by fully autonomous trips with passengers.

Each vehicle is equipped with six long- and mid-range cameras, four radars, and four LiDAR sensors to ensure precise detection and navigation.

The initiative coincides with preparations for the Autonomous e-Mobility Forum 2026, scheduled from April 7 to 9, 2026, which will bring together policymakers, industry leaders, and innovators from over 25 countries to discuss future mobility, sustainability, and regulatory frameworks.

These efforts support the Third Qatar National Development Strategy (NDS3), which emphasizes adopting advanced technologies for sustainable growth and economic diversification. They also align with the Transportation Master Plan for Qatar-2050, a long-term roadmap to integrate transport networks with urban development, population growth, and future mobility needs.

By embracing autonomous mobility, Qatar reinforces its global standing as a leader in innovative, sustainable transportation.
