In another moment of massive pride for the country, Mohamed Al Rumaihi and Tala Abujbara have been named Team Qatar's flagbearers in the Olympic Games opening ceremony.

The opening ceremony of Tokyo 2020 will take place today at 2.00 p.m. (Doha time). 

This will be the first Olympics edition to see two athletes carry their country's flag.

Al Rumaihi and Abujbara will be Qatar's first joint flagbearers, following a directive by the International Olympic Committee in March 2020 where each team could have a flagbearer to represent both genders.

Team Qatar’s first day of competitions at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics began today with Qatari rowing athlete Abujubara living her Olympic dream.

Abujbara is the first-ever female rower from the region to qualify for an Olympic Games.

The 29-year-old history-making female rower qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Games after finishing third in the women's single sculls' B' Final of the 2021 Asia & Oceania Olympic Qualification Regatta in Tokyo, Japan, on May 7. She was a second-place finisher in the women's single sculls (w1x) - final e at the 2019 World Championships, Abujbara, who completed the Tokyo race in eight minutes 20.58sec, secured the third of five berths on offer at the competition.

Tala had previously won the gold medal at the 2nd Arab Indoor Rowing Championship in Kuwait in 2018.

Al Rumaihi has trained at Asaka Shooting Range. The trap shooter is set to kick off with his campaign on July 28.

Team Qatar is poised to make the nation proud and ensure that Qatar's tenth consecutive participation in the Summer Games, since its maiden appearance in 1984, will go down in history as one of the country's best ever.
