Can anyone suggest a good Butcher's Shop or the best supermarket for fresh meat?

Does anyone else here find the cuts of beef and lamb very tough. Apart from minced meat, the steaks, chops etc seem almost inedible to me - really tough and sinewy. I end up eating it the Chinese way (or how I've seen some Chinese eat, anyway) 4 or 5 chews to get the goodness from the meat, then spit it out because you can't chew through it!

Could it be the way the beasts are slaughtered? I don't quite know how halal and kosher works. Something to do with the blood I think, but could that be why I find meat here tougher than in, say, UK?

I've tried every which way to cook different cuts of meat, even on the BBQ, and about the most successful has been to stick them in a pot on top of the stove, drizzle of oil, sear them, put the lid on top and leave on low heat for about 2 hours! Even then it's not really tender.
Now I come to think about it, even take-away meat curries we've had in Doha are too chewy also, so it can't just be MY cooking!!!

And before any wise-guy suggests I get new teeth, I can assure you I do OK with poultry, toast and toffee without my teeth falling out LOL

I am a vegetarian by choice but on certain occasions when I have cooked frozen meat (mostly chicken and mutton) I found out it goes tough and rubbery after few hours. It has to be consumed immediately after being cooked or may be there is soemthing wrong with my cooking. There is a butchery shop near 'Food Palace' in Musherib and if anyone can give me reviews I will be thankful.

The best butcher in Doha is the Lebanese Butchery. Am not quoting them because of the name. The butchers are Turkish.

It is located at Al Nasr near FFC

and was also put off it because it's the babies and they are reared only for slaughter at a very young age. But mainly I've never found any flavour to veal.

Spicemom, hi! I think I have been buying Aussie meat (I don't always check where it's from lol). Apart from Mutton Liver (which I ADORE) from India.

yes jauntie that'll do the trick to tenderize the meat too, i normally get my meat fr shoprite , carrefour sometimes (these are for steaks) now for normal cooking i normally get the brazillian (when i can find them)else it'll be either NZ or aussie meats and also i do cut the meats following the grains and not the other way around(my momma's tip)>winks

I wonder what response my husband would get if we went up to the butcher and he said "I'd like a young cow please, this old cow (with me)is too tough". LOL

I have, in fact, used marinade (something I like to do anyway) but have to admit I haven't bashed the meat around a bit before cooking it. In UK I have a little wooden mullet with pointy bits one end specifically for beating the meat. Better buy one here!

Tougher cuts of meat can also be made tender by pounding or marinating them before cooking papaya is a good natrual tenderizer

The older the cow is the harder its meat is, the younger the cow is the more tender its beef if. Moreover the meat of an old cow has a certain smell and it doesnt go away even after cooking whereas the young cow's meat does not has any smell.

So the next time you buy beef make sure that it is from a young cow.

By the way....I was walking in the Bazaar Road in Matar Qadim.

I saw a butcher store near the Turkish Restaurants.

Maybe you can try it...if you stay somewhere near the airport, that is.

I thought for a minute there, DaRu, that you were going to say they would chop my food up for me, put a baby's bib on me and feed me with a spoon! hahahaha

Seriously, though ..... I have to admit I have only ONCE asked the butcher to cut the meat off a joint for me (and that was only because I couldn't see any ready cut lamb chops on display). When I opened the package at home the chump chops must have been about one-and-a-half inches thick!!!!

Maybe I'll make just more stews ...

get used to a shop tell them how you want them to be cut in small piece once they know you well they wont ask you again how you need them.

Chupa I also like my steaks rare, but like I said when my hub BBQd a couple the other day (nice and pink inside) even HE couldn't chew through it and gave up.

Those were bought at Lulu, by the way. I had bought two thin slices of what they called 'breakfast steaks' to try and it was the same! chew chew chew and never get the teeth to meet through the meat! LMAO

DaRu? You want to see my teeth? GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAWWWWWWW
