In a development that complements Qatar’s move toward pursuing sustainable energy solutions, the country’s General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has received five bids from international developers for the establishment of Qatar’s first solar power plant.
The project will allow Qatar to produce electricity by using photovoltaic technology.
Being implemented under a public-private partnership model, construction at the West Doha Solar Power Plant project is already underway near the Al Kharsa'a district.

Kahramaa reviews and evaluates technical, legal and commercial offers for the project.
The project covers an area of 10sq km. The total capacity of the solar power project is estimated to be a minimum of 700 MW, of which 350 MW will be connected to the grid in the first quarter of 2021, and commercial operation will begin in the first quarter of 2022, according to Kharamaa.
Kahramaa has already qualified 16 of the world's top companies to establish and develop solar power plants, where bids poured in from companies and alliances in countries including France, Japan, South Korea, and China.
The plant complements the corporation's endeavors to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, lower carbon emissions and increase energy efficiency by diversifying sources of electricity production. This is in addition to increasing the proportion of renewable energy.
The project is also well-aligned with the Qatar National Vision 2030 within the pillars of economic development and environmental development to diversify sources of electricity production.
Kahramaa is the sole owner and operator of the network of electricity and water distribution systems in Qatar.
