In a bid to enhance road safety in Qatar, the General Directorate of Traffic will roll out a month-long traffic awareness campaign from July 1 to August 1.

The campaign titled “Accident-free Summer” aims to raise public awareness on traffic rules and encourage motorists to drive safely.

The announcement of the campaign was made earlier today at a press conference organized by the Traffic Awareness Department.

Colonel Nasser Darman Al Hajri, Assistant Director General of Traffic, Colonel Mohammad Radhi Al Hajri, Director of Traffic Awareness Department and officers of the General Directorate of Traffic attended the event.

According to Colonel Al-Hajri, this year’s campaign will focus on field awareness through inspection campaigns carried out jointly with the Traffic Patrols Department and the Public Relations Department.

The initiative will focus on educating drivers, particularly youngsters, about traffic violations such as driving without a license, overtaking from the right, using a mobile phone while driving, parking in the places reserved for people with special needs, obstructing traffic by stopping in the yellow box, among others.

The department will distribute awareness-raising materials to drivers on the roads across Doha’s neighborhoods and other areas.

The activities will take place with the support of the Talaa department responsible for detecting all traffic offenses including the violation of stopping in the yellow box. Drivers who stop in the yellow box will be fined QR500. 

Furthermore, Colonel Al Hajri said the 2017 and 2018 traffic awareness campaign had a positive impact on the overall adherence rate of traffic rules.

There has been a notable decline in the number of violations, he said.

In particular, the violation of overtaking from the right has decreased significantly, with a decline of 68.4 percent.

Driving without a license has decreased by 16.1 percent and the violations of parking in places of people with special needs are down by 22.4 percent.
