Bahrain’s appeals court sentenced three senior members of the country’s opposition movement to life term in prison over charges of spying for Qatar, a charge the country firmly denies.
Sheikh Ali Salman, who headed the now-outlawed Al Wefaq movement, as well as Sheikh Hassan Sultan and Ali Al Aswad were sentenced on Sunday, after they were acquitted by the high criminal court in June, reported Al Jazeera.
Sultan and Al Aswad were tried in absentia.
Meanwhile, Qatar has strongly condemned the mentioning of its name in Bahrain’s political disputes and internal conflicts.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) calls on relevant institutions in Bahrain to deal with their local public opinion as well as the GCC and international public opinion more seriously and responsibly,” MOFA said in a statement on its official website.
“Do not resort to politicisation of the judiciary or mention the name of the State of Qatar in favour of political scores that are proved to be narrow-minded and not worthy of States,” the statement said.
