Do you remember a recent picture that went viral on social media which showed a road sign painted with the words ‘Q Gate’ on it?

While the consensus was that it was a toll gate, people could not agree on how soon it would be activated. While some felt it would be activated immediately, others thought that it would be several years before it was launched.

Now, there seems to be some sort of confirmation about the date of its launch.

The mysterious ‘Q Gate’ is indeed a toll gate and it will be activated only within the next two years, after the completion of all ongoing road projects, reported The Peninsula.

Brigadier Mohammed Saad Al Kharji, the Director of Qatar’s General Directorate of Traffic, confirmed the news to Al Sharq newspaper in a recent interview.

Al Kharji pointed out that the Q Gates fall under the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

He categorically said talks about charging a certain amount from drivers through electronic gates on the roads was premature.

“The Q Gates can be made operational only when all parallel roads are ready for use. This new technology can be used on busy roads to ease congestion,” he was quoted as saying by Al Sharq.

“The aim of these gates is to reduce traffic pressure, which will effectively alleviate congestion on roads like 22 February street,” he added.

It is understood that toll will be collected through a rechargeable card displayed on the windscreen of the vehicle. Each time the car passes the gate, the fee will be automatically deducted from the card.
