A Thousand and One Nights
The storyline of the ballet A Thousand and One Nights is based on the masterpiece of Persian and Arabian literature and is filled with the music of creative genius of prominent Azerbaijani composer Fikret Amirov (1922–1984). Amirov, enriched by his travels in Iraq, Iran, Turkey, Egypt, Syria, Morocco, and encounters with local traditions, infused the score with the authentic essence of Middle Eastern musical culture.
An array of percussion instruments, including bongos, tam-tam, xylophone, vibraphone, drums, bells, cymbals, and gongs, along with the Azerbaijani stringed instrument tar, bring the richness of Arabic rhythm to life. Amirov, aspiring to global recognition for Azerbaijani music, skillfully wove Eastern melodies into classical European forms, reminiscent of the folk orchestra sounds from his youth. In August 2020 the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre embraced the ballet A Thousand and One Nights into its repertoire.
