All “Marriott” hotels are top-of-the-line, full-service business-class hotels.
“JW Marriott” is a step above that, geared toward the luxury market. It was originally introduced as Marriott's answer to other luxury hotel brands like Ritz-Carlton and Saint Regis. Since then Marriott has acquired both of those other luxury brands, but the comparison still applies. We operate all three luxury brands to help capture the equivalent three segments of the luxury travel market.
Marriott Marquis is a special “sub-brand” within that space. The first Marriott Marquis was opened in New York City, and is so named because it's built on top of the Marquis theatre on Broadway. Over time it's become something like a flagship hotel for the company. Due to its reputation, the company decided to open several other “Marquis” hotels around the country to help capitalize on the name.
