Doha College announces new extended school hours
Starting next academic year (August 2023), Doha College will extend its hours across all year groups, with the school day beginning at 7.15 in Primary and 7.20 in Secondary, and ending for all at 1.55, with an optional early collection for FS1. The greatest addition of time will benefit the youngest students, namely those in FS1, who will have more time in school to explore their curiosity and develop new skills while giving parents more flexibility.
A Doha College education reaches far beyond the curriculum. Students develop a balanced understanding of the world around them, learning to be considerate of others, nurturing the abilities to listen, to consider other perspectives, to form opinions and to have the confidence to stand up and be heard. Students develop skills that will serve them well as global citizens.
EYFS AT DOHA COLLEGE
Doha College, a not-for-profit British international school, places great emphasis on its Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) programme. Students explore, discover, and develop their skills through play. This flourishes a love for learning and builds a strong foundation before progressing into Primary.
Ruth Whymark, Senior Vice-Principal, Head of Primary at Doha College, said that EYFS is pivotal in a child’s development as the brain grows and develops more rapidly during this time than any other. The experiences a child has during this period shapes the way the brain develops and influences long-term outcomes.
Delivered over two years (FS1 and FS2), EYFS lays the foundation for future academic and personal success. A quality early years education provides children with the head start needed to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.
A high-quality early years education provides children with the experiences and opportunities needed to develop cognitive, social, and emotional skills. This helps better prepare children for future academic and personal challenges.
Doha College’s dedicated EYFS facilities capture imagination, foster learning, and encourage fun. With large classrooms, expansive shaded outdoor areas, engaging library spaces for adventurous story time, and interactive music rooms, every day at Doha College is an exciting new journey of discovery.
The structure of the school day in EYFS is built to include core curriculum and specialised lessons. The new extended hours at Doha College begin at 7.15am and finish at 1.55pm, with an optional early collection for FS1.
Tips to Prepare Your Child for Early Years Education
Doha College shares top tips for parents to prepare their child for success in the classroom:
Develop social and emotional skills by encouraging your child to express their emotions, practice empathy, share and take turns.
- Establish independence and routines with eating, sleeping, and toileting. For example, can your child dress themselves and wash their hands after visiting the bathroom?
- Encourage exploration and play by allowing your child to enjoy the world around them, both indoors and outdoors. This helps develop curiosity, imagination, and creativity.
- Read to your child to develop language and literacy skills. You can read stories, sing songs, and recite nursery rhymes to make it fun and engaging.
- Support a love of learning by encouraging your child to ask questions, experiment, and discover. Support their natural curiosity and help them find joy in learning.
- Teach basic skills to your child such as holding a pencil and writing their name.
With a commitment to making the learning journey enjoyable and supporting every student to identify their ambitions, skills, aspirations, and passions, Doha College believes education should be a positive, inspiring and happy experience from which friendships and memories are made for life.
