Shanghai Ranking Consultancy released the 2022 edition of The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) which puts Qatar University (QU) in the 501-600 tier. Back in July 2022, QU had remarkable results on the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects issued by the same agency. More than 2500 educational institutions went through scrutiny this year among which the best 1000 universities globally were ranked. It’s a commendable achievement that QU becomes the sole representative of Qatar in this ranking.
“We were among the top 700 universities in the world last year, but this year we have dramatically improved by placing ourselves among the top 600 universities in the world, which is the result of our team's dedication. We are proud to be a top university in the area and to retain a strong presence alongside renowned research universities all around the world. Our renowned curricula, devoted faculty, and outstanding research capabilities are largely responsible for our success,” remarked Dr. Hassan Al-Derham, 6th President of Qatar University.
Clinical Medicine, Environmental Science & Engineering and Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences were the three new subjects that QU was ranked in this year. Exceptional improvement was displayed in the subjects of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Instruments Science & Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Transportation Science & Technology while a stead performance was maintained in Automation & Control, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Education, Energy Science & Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering disciplines.
Divulging into a bit of history, ARWU has begun publishing in June 2003 by the Center for World-Class Universities (CWCU), Graduate School of Education of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China and was updated on an annual basis. ARWU has been successfully ranking top universities annually across the globe since 2003. The rating is thoroughly based on a set of objective indicators and third-party data. Being recognized as a precursor of global university rankings and the most trustworthy league table, the publication adopts six target indicators to base its world universities ranking upon. These include the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, the number of Highly Cited Researchers and articles indexed in Science Citation Index. Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index based on data in the Web of Science, and per capita performance is also included.
Since 2009, ARWU has been published and copyrighted by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy. The consultancy is a fully independent organization that’s completely dedicated to focusing its research on higher education intelligence and consultation.
