Some tips on protecting your child from the many dangers of the internet

By kadija latibu

In today’s world, technology has invaded the largest portion of our lives. Gone are the days when children and teenagers play silly outdoor games and when “Super Mario” was the coolest computer game ever.

Now, every child is exposed to so much of technology and surf the internet so freely that at times, they can even fall prey to many of the dark sides of the net that it stealthily hides.

Hence, given below are some tips that we think parents could follow to protect their children from the dangers lurking the internet.

1- Be the person to introduce the internet to your child. Discuss and explore fun and exciting websites together. This will make it easy for your child to open about any negative experience that he/she might undergo in the future.

2- Come to a mutual agreement with your child on how long he/she could surf the net.

3- Educate your child about the negativity of internet and make them aware about not disclosing personal information on sites.

4- Talk about “online friends” and meeting them in person and the unpleasantness that might crop up with such friends.

5- Respect one another and put a stop to cyber bullying. Respect the privacy of your child and teach them about the proper virtues so that they will not go astray. This will make them to trust you a lot.

6- Found anything illegal on the internet? Report it!

7- Remember, don’t be too critical with your child when he/she uses the internet. Handle them with a steady yet easy going hand.

As britexpat mentioned about filters on web browsing, parents should also set Parental Controls on mobile devices like iPads/iPhones and Android phones/tablets.
