Wearing a suit? Don’t make these mistakes
By : Fazmina Samat
Suits are, what is known as the ‘cherry on top’ of professional attires, but pulling off the perfect look to make you look like the next Chris Hemsworth in a Tom Ford, requires attention to detail. Avoid these common mistakes to ensure that you look sharp, stylish and dapper.
Wearing a suit that looks like it’s your sister’s – get the right fit!
Wearing a suit that is too tight will make you look like you raided your sister’s closet, while a suit that is too big for you will give the impression you borrowed it from someone twice your size. They key is to find a fit that’s just right – not too tight, not too loose. A well-fitted suit should contour your body without constraining it, providing both comfort and style.
Keep your tie knot tight
A tie can make or break your suit’s overall appearance. Make sure your tie knot is tight and the length of your tie is right at the top of your belt buckle. These small details can significantly enhance your overall look.
Keep the cuffs of your shirt visible
The cuffs of your shirt should be extending about half an inch beyond the sleeves of your blazer. This very minimal touch adds a layer of sophistication and shows that you pay attention to finer details.
The pocket square should not always match the tie
If you're thinking about pairing your pocket square with your tie, hold it right there! The purpose of the pocket square is to complement the rest of your look: either by harmonising or contrasting with your overall look. This contrast creates a balanced and elegant look by adding personality to your suit.
The correct pant length
One way to measure this is by getting the hem of your pants to rest on top of your shoes. This creates a clean line that enhances your silhouette, avoiding the excess fabric that can look sloppy or the too-short hems that can look awkward.
Make use of the blazer pockets
Blazer pockets exist for a reason. Use them to store away items like your phone, wallet instead of creating an unpleasant bulge in your pockets. This not only keeps your hands free, but it also doesn’t disrupt the sleek lines in your suit.
Never fasten the last button
Always keep the last button of your blazer unbuttoned. This rule helps maintain the blazer’s desired shape and ensures a more flattering fit when you walk or sit.
The ideal blazer length
The correct blazer length is optimal for a perfect fit. The blazer should end at your thumb knuckles when your arms are relaxed at your sides. This length measurement is universal and is flattering when adhered to. This ensures that your proportions are balanced.
