The mischievous Labubu taking over Qatar (and the World)

By : Fazmina Samat
If you've been scrolling through TikTok or Instagram, chances are you've come across this odd little character that's part adorable, part spooky and identified as 'Labubu'. But what exactly is Labubu and why is everyone, including international celebrities obsessed with it?
Let's break it down....
First and foremost, you may be surprised to know that Labubu is actually a girl! Many misinterpret this factor given the initial assumption at first glance. Nevertheless, her loyal fan base is quick to set the record straight as Labubu is not a solo doll, she is part of 'The Monsters', which is a quirky and whimsical crew created by Hong Kong artist and storyteller Kasing Lung.

Originally introduced in a Nordic-inspired picture book trilogy in 2015, these characters were brought to life as collectable vinyl toys by Pop Mart in 2019. Since then, they’ve become an international sensation — and now, Qatar is catching on!
Who is Labubu really?
Pop Mart, which is a market-leading character-based entertainment company, describes Labubu as an 'elvish creature who is cheeky but sweet. While she may come off a bit mischievous with her toothy grin and spooky look, Labubu always has the best of intentions.
If you see a similar figure but with a spiked tail, that's Zimomo - not Labubu. Zimomo is the leader of 'The Monsters'. Tycoco - a vegetarian skeleton monster is the love interest of Labubu. (So Cute!)
Why is everyone obsessed with Labubu?
All due credit for this goes to Lisa from BLACKPINK, who openly fangirled over Labubu in interviews and on social media. Resulting in a global purchasing frenzy! Collectors worldwide, including Qatar, are hunting these toys down. Internationally, fans are camping overnight or paying high premium prices just to get their hands on one!
Today, The Monsters is Pop Mart's top-selling franchise with $419 million in sales last year. Labubu fever has no signs of slowing down.
Beware of the 'Lafufus'!
With such popularity, there's always the possibility of fakes in the markets, aka Lafufus! These counterfeits look very real at first glance; however, we decoded the ways to spot the fakes.
- Teeth check - The original Labubu has exactly 9 teeth.
- Paint job - Analyse the eyes and blush - counterfeits have a dull or messy paint job.
- Forehead stitching - The original Labubu has neat, even stitching.
- Foot stamp - check the soles. The original Labubu has the Pop Mart logo and 'O Kasing' engraved.
So, whether you’re a collector, a curious fan, or someone looking for a fun gift in Qatar, Labubu is more than just a viral toy — she’s a pop culture icon with a spooky-sweet charm that’s impossible to resist! 💖👹
