How to get a water and electricity Kahramaa connection in Qatar
Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa), as the name suggests, is the sole provider of electricity and water in the country. If you are staying in a new place, the first thing you should do is to ensure that the essential home utilities are taken care of. That’s why Kahramaa is of utmost importance in Qatar.
Getting a Kahramaa connection used to involve a bit of time and paperwork until recently but now you can do it with a few clicks on your mouse or keypad, or a few taps on your phone.
Earlier, applying for a Kahramaa connection was a lengthy process. First, you needed to download the ‘Move in’ application form and fill in the details. You also needed a copy of your rental agreement, a letter from your employer, your ID, landlord’s ID or Company Commercial Registration, ‘Sanad Mulkiya’ or ownership deed and a whole lot of patience to go with it.
You had to either upload them on the website or take them to a service centre and register the connection in your name first. Then the authorities would check the reading and within 48 hours you would be able to pay QR2000 as a caution deposit and you had the connection under your name.
But now if you have a valid rental agreement, getting a Kahramaa connection is as easy as getting a new email ID.
Now it is mandatory for your landlord to register the rental contract with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) and that has made getting Kahramaa a whole lot easier for the tenants. The MME will forward the details of the tenant and the landlord to Kahramaa who will send an SMS to both parties when it is approved.
All you need to do is to download the Kahramaa app or login into the website, create a user ID and register there. Kahramaa will then send you an activation number through an SMS which you need to type in when you log in. Pay QR2000 using your credit/debit card and you are good to go.
Sometimes it might take a couple of days before you find the option to pay the caution deposit, but don’t worry, Kahramaa would be using that time to take the reading of your water and electricity meters before transferring it into your name.
Once you activate the account with the activation code, the connection is in your name. But please ensure that you don’t waste any water or electricity and use it carefully and wisely. It’s not only that they are precious but if Kahramaa or the MME find out you will have to pay a hefty fine.
