14 Qatari athletes look to shine at Paris Olympic Games
As the countdown for the 33rd Summer Olympics in Paris continues, 14 Qatari athletes are gearing up to put their best foot forward and raise their nation’s flag higher.
The Qatari athletes, representing the country in five different sports, are all aspiring to deliver stunning performances and win medals at the world’s largest sporting event.
Eight track and field stars — led by triple world and reigning Olympic champion high jumper Mutaz Essa Barshim — will lead Qatar’s charge. Understandably, athletics holds the most prominent presence for Qatar in Paris.
Mutaz, who won silver at the 2012 London and 2016 Rio Games and gold at 2020 Tokyo, will be aiming to retain his Olympic title in his last participation at the quadrennial Games.
Qatar will have three representatives in 400M hurdles. Abderrahman Samba, who won bronze at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, will be joined by Bassem Hemeida, who secured his Olympic qualification by winning gold at the 25th Asian Championships in Bangkok, and Ismail Dawood, who qualified during an international athletics competition in South Africa.
The athletics team will also feature Abubakar Hayder (800M), who earned his Olympic spot by winning first place in the Spanish Championship, Ammar Ismail (400M), Saif Mohammed (pole vault) and Shahad Mohamed (women’s 400M).
In shooting, Qatar will be represented by Saeed Abusharib, who qualified for Paris 2024 by winning silver in men’s individual trap event at the Asian Shooting Championships in Changwon, South Korea.
Rashid Saleh Al Athba, who earned his spot by winning bronze in the World Skeet Championships in Osijek, Croatia, will join him. At Athba had also won gold at the Asian Championships in South Korea.
Meanwhile, weightlifter Fares Ibrahim, who won gold in 96kg category at 2020 Tokyo, will return to compete in Paris. Fares, earned qualification for the 102kg event by winning silver at the World Weightlifting Championships in Saudi Arabia recently.
The Qatari beach volleyball team, consisting of Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan, will appear in their third consecutive Olympics after qualifying through Olympic world rankings announced by the International Volleyball Federation. They will seek to improve on their bronze medal win from Tokyo 2020.
Qatari swimmer Abdulaziz Al Obaidly, who will compete in 200M breaststroke, will aim to do well and establish his presence among the world’s best athletes.
Barshim and Shahad will carry the national flag at the Olympics opening ceremony in Paris.
