5 tips to save money on travelling and transportation…
How often have you woken up thinking, ‘Only if my salary grew at the same pace as the cost of living did.’ If you have thought about this at least once, you are not alone.
While that hike in salary may take time, a few minor tweaks to your lifestyle can help you get more bang for your buck. And the more money you save, the better you can use it.
While finding ways to save money is challenging, we at Qatar Living have some tips to help you do so more effectively. In the second part of our series on saving money, we discuss tips to help you reduce travel and transportation bills.
1. Try to use public transportation as much as possible
Using your car to get to work and around town gives you great freedom. However, it often comes at a cost. With rising fuel prices, every second you are stuck in traffic will drain your finances a little more.
Qatar’s public transportation system is very robust and easy to use. If you are not in a hurry, use Karwa buses, which are cheaper and safer. The Doha Metro is an even faster mode of travel, albeit on a modest budget. Metro feeder buses will even take you from your home to the station. Make use of these options, and feel good about saving money.
2. Carpool with friends
If you want to avoid the hassle of public transport, use a car to get from Point A to Point B, and still save some money, carpooling is the way to go. Ask colleagues or friends to see if they are going to the same place as you and share the car. Each member saves on fuel and maintenance costs, and you gain quality time together. On the next occasion, reciprocate the action and let your friends travel with you in your car. This is a win-win.
3. Take a walk or cycle to your destination
Curb that craving to take your car to every which place. Instead, if your destination is not too far and is accessible on foot, walk the distance. If the place is slightly far away, then ride a bicycle there, should the weather permit. Not only will it save on fuel costs, it will also prove to be good for your health.
4. Use ride-sharing apps
If your destination is a bit far and not accessible on foot or by bicycle, the next thing to consider is getting a taxi. Online ride-hailing apps, like Uber, can be cheaper than traditional taxis. Plus, there will always be promotions and discounts available in-app, making the ride even more economical.
5. Plan your travel during off-peak hours
Whether traveling by private car or taking a taxi, planning your journey to coincide with off-peak hours will offer immense savings in both time and money. With less likelihood of traffic congestion and stoppages, you will not get stuck in traffic and hence save on fuel costs.
