Accor hires 12,000 temporary employees to manage fan housing for Qatar World Cup

Europe's largest hotel operator, Accor has been hired to recruit and manage 12,000 temporary overseas employees who will operate 65,000 empty rooms during the FIFA World Cup 2022. The temporary fan housing will be in homes and apartments and will recruit housekeepers, front-desk staff, logistics experts, and others.

With the aim of avoiding accommodation shortages during the tournament, the stats show Qatar currently has 30,000 hotel rooms, out of which 80% have already been booked by official guests and the governing body of FIFA.

Accor chairman and CEO Sébastien Bazin stated that this project would be dismantled at the end of December. With the official World Cup accommodation website receiving over 25,000 bookings, the hospitality industry is offering over 100,000 rooms, as per Omar Al Jaber, executive director of accommodation for tournament organizers the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy

"We will be under pressure until the first match has started. This is normal and we are ready," Al Jaber said.

Qatar has estimated up to 1.2 million visitors during the 28-day tournament in November and December. In addition to the accommodation available, they are also offering over 4,000 rooms and two cruise ships at the Doha Port, and over 1000 Bedouin-style desert tents in pre-fabricated fan village cabins. As per the rules, ticket holders must have pre-booked accommodations if they are staying overnight in the country during the World Cup. Without accommodation, most fans won’t be issued a mandatory fan ID, which doubles as a visa to Qatar.

According to Bazin, Accor is shipping 500 containers from China, including furnishings, in addition to the plan to re-deploy its fleet of trucks, buses, and cars from Mecca in Saudi Arabia to ensure that there is no vehicle shortage during the tournament as well.
