After 27 years at the helm, Akbar Al Baker to step down as Qatar Airways Group CEO
After 27 years at the helm, Qatar Airways Group CEO Akbar Al Baker has announced he is stepping down from the role effective November 5.
“After 27 years of service, I am writing to you to announce that I will step down from the Qatar Airways Group,” he wrote in an email to Qatar Airways staff.
“Our achievements represent the gold standard of aviation. Qatar Airways has grown to become one of the most recognisable and trusted airline brands globally, synonymous with customer service quality and the highest of standards,” he recalled.
Al Baker was appointed as chief of Qatar Airways by HH The Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani in 1997.
Starting as a small company with a fleet of just four aircraft, Al Baker transformed Qatar Airways into an aviation behemoth which operates more than 200 aircraft to more than 130 destinations.
“It has been an incredible privilege to lead such an exceptional global team and the honour of a lifetime to serve my country,” Al Baker was quoted as telling members of his staff.
Al Baker, whose great vision turned Qatar Airways into a global aviation powerhouse, is also the CEO of Hamad International Airport.
It is understood that the airline will announce Al Baker’s successor soon.
