Motorsports fans in Qatar are in for another treat as the FIA Formula 2 Championship announced Lusail International Circuit as a new race venue for the first time on Friday.

Formula 2, which is the main F1 support category race, retained its 14-round calendar by replacing the race in Zandvoort, Netherlands, with Qatar. The event will be held from November 29 to December 1.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem was happy to add Qatar to the mix.

“I’m pleased to confirm such an exciting FIA Formula 2 Championship calendar for 2024, following on from the announcement of the 24-race calendar for Formula 1 a few weeks ago,” said Sulayem.

“The breadth of venues and the addition of Qatar is a clear demonstration of the strength and interest in F2 globally. The talent we’ve in the Championship is very positive for the future. Formula 2 delivers exciting racing for the fans at every event,” he added.

The eighth season of Formula 2 will open at the Bahrain International Circuit (February 29 to March 2) before heading to Saudi Arabia, at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit (March 7 to 9).Melbourne, Australia, will host the third round from March 22 to 24.

The campaign will pick up in Europe with back-to-back race weekends — in Imola, Italy (May 17 to 19) and Monte Carlo, Monaco (May 23 to 26).

In June, the action will carry on to Barcelona, Spain (June 21 to 23), Spielberg, Austria (June 28 to 30) and Silverstone, UK (July 5 to 7).

A double-header will come next, starting with Budapest, Hungary (July 19 to 21) and Round 10 in Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium (July 26 to 28).

After a summer break, the field will return to Monza, Italy (August 30 to September 1) before flying to Baku, Azerbaijan on September 13 to 15.

The 13th round will take place in Doha, Qatar (November 29 to December 1) before concluding at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi (December 6 to 8).

FIA Formula 2 CEO Bruno Michel said was also thrilled with the new development.

“I’m very pleased to announce that there’ll be 14 rounds and 28 races on the Formula 2 calendar in 2024. Next year, we’ll race in Qatar, which is a very exciting new venue. The final leg of the season will see Baku, Qatar and Abu Dhabi after the race weekend in Monza, making the 2024 calendar more balanced,” he said.
