Amir Cup title showdown on May 24

The Qatar Football Association (QFA) announced on Thursday that the 53rd Amir Cup final will be held at the iconic Khalifa International Stadium on May 24.
Three other prominent venues — Al Thumama Stadium, Jassim bin Hamad Stadium and Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium — will also host knock-out matches of this year’s tournament.
The announcement was made by Ali Hamoud Al Nuaimi, QFA’s Head of Competitions, on the sidelines of the tournament’s Round of 16 draw.

The Round of 16 will feature 12 teams from the Qatar Stars League and four qualifiers from the country’s Second Division. The tournament will follow a single-match knockout format, with extra time and penalty shootouts to be used if necessary.
The tournament will kick off on May 4 with two matches — Al Shahania vs Al Mesaimeer and Al Ahli vs Qatar SC. It will be followed by Al Duhail vs Al Sailiya and Al Rayyan vs Lusail on May 5.
Al Gharafa will take on Al Khor while Al Sadd will face Al Kharaitiyat on May 6. The last Round of 16 matches will be Al Wakrah vs Umm Salal and Al Shamal vs Al Arabi (May 7).
Coaches and team officials spoke of their hopes and expectations. Al Sadd Sporting Director of QSL champions Mohammed Gholam said they were aiming for a domestic double.
“We want to keep winning titles and compete strongly to achieve the double this season. Our focus will be on our first match against Al Kharaitiyat. We’ll begin preparations for the tournament’s 53rd edition with great hope after winning the league title,” he said.
Duhail’s coach Christophe Galtier was wary of their opponents, but hoped they could salvage the season by lifting the Amir Cup title.
“AL Sailiya will be difficult opponents in the round of 16. They’ve done well in the Second Division and earned promotion to the First Division. I hope Al Duhail can lift their Amir Cup fifth title. This is important to make up for our disappointment in the League,” Galtier said.
Al Ahli’s assistant coach Khaled Taj said his team was committed to delivering a good show to their fans.
“We’re committed to delivering the expected performance in this prestigious tournament and advancing to the final stages. Our chances against Qatar SC are equal, considering both teams’ positions in the Qatar Stars League this season. It’ll be a strong match, as each team knows the other well,” he said.
