His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani will embark on an official visit to Canada, meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to advance bilateral relations and address key regional and global issues. This first-of-its-kind visit will be accompanied by HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani and an official delegation. The trip signifies a major milestone in the long-standing Qatar-Canada relationship, built on mutual respect and collaboration since 1974.

The visit aims to strengthen cooperation across diverse sectors, including economy, education, politics, and trade, while also enhancing joint efforts on global political and security matters. Recent trade exchanges have surged to QR1.358bn in 2023, with Canada exporting aircraft, machinery, and paper products, and importing aluminium, mineral fuels, and fertilisers from Qatar.

Canadian companies have played an essential role in developing Qatar’s infrastructure, particularly in energy, technology, health, and defence. A major highlight includes QatarEnergy’s successful bid for a Canadian offshore oil field, Parcel 8, in partnership with ExxonMobil.

Education remains a pivotal area of collaboration, with institutions like the University of Calgary – Qatar offering nursing degrees and Canadian curricula being taught at schools in Doha. The two countries continue to explore new avenues of cooperation, such as artificial intelligence, advanced technology, and sustainable energy.

Additionally, previous high-level discussions between the two nations have covered pressing global issues, including the situation in Gaza and broader Middle Eastern affairs, with Canada expressing appreciation for Qatar’s humanitarian efforts. These strong diplomatic ties reflect a shared commitment to a robust, forward-looking partnership, benefiting both nations and the international community.
