Awqaf to host over 1,500 activities in the country during Ramadan
Qatar’s Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs is set to organise over 1,500 religious, cultural and awareness activities during the holy month of Ramadan, organises said on Wednesday.
A total of 2,278 mosques have been prepared to receive worshipers for prayers and Taraweeh during the Holy month. Most of the mosques will also have designated places for women.
The Ministry’s Iftar programme is scheduled to be held at 20 places, where 700,000 Iftar meals will be provided to fasting people. A total of 24,000 meals will be served every day.
Suleiman bin Jumaan Al Qahtani, Director of Mosques Management Department at Awqaf, addressed a Press conference at the Imam Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab Mosque on Wednesday.

Al Qahtani said mosques had been readied more than a month before Ramadan. The preparations included cleaning and maintaining them, providing loudspeakers and necessary furnishings, and preparing women’s prayer rooms.
“Awqaf will open 12 new mosques by the start of Ramadan. Many Imams have been assigned to lead worshipers in Taraweeh and Qiyam prayers in mosques across Qatar,” he said.
“During the last ten days of Ramadan, we’ll implement the Itikaf project in several mosques. We’ll also publish a list of Eid prayer grounds at the end of Ramadan,” added Al Qahtani.
Awqaf’s Director of Endowment Funds Department Jassim bin Hassan Bu Hazza said they will implement the Iftar Saim Project to offer iftar meals throughout Ramadan.
“A total of 15 Ramadan tents will be set up to provide Iftar meals to fasting people. Iftar meals will also be distributed at five other places. We’ll also implement a food basket project to provide basic food commodities to needy families in coordination with Hifz Al Naama Center,” he said.
Head of Zakat Services Section Muhammad bin Jaber Al Baridi said the Department had intensified its efforts to encourage Zakat.
“The department works in two shifts, morning and evening, and receives cases and submits requests via the department’s website. We’ll also implement a marketing campaign to urge community members to pay zakat,” said Al Baridi.
Director of Department of Religious Call and Guidance Malallah Abdul Rahman Al Jaber said Ramadan preaching plan included the implementation of 1,400 activities covering all aspects of life and faith during the holy month.
It will include mosque lessons, seminars, competitions for children and adults and field visits to patients in hospitals.
Fanar Director Dr Saleh Ali Al Akhen said the centre would provide a large number of Ramadan programmes and events for non-Arabic speakers.
“The Center will hold a course in Arabic language for non-native speakers, and an introductory program for Filipino community about the month of Ramadan and highlighting Qatari culture. The Center will also hold a Ramadan competition for Muslims in several languages, as well as a Communities Forum, which hosts a number of preachers to present advocacy programmes,” said Al Akhen.
