Beware of online fundraising frauds, says officials

Officials have urged the public to be cautious of scams designed to exploit people’s generosity during the Holy month of Ramadan. The warning was issued following a rise in fraudulent fundraising activities online.
The Qatar Central Bank, National Cyber Security Agency, and the Qatar Financial Centre Regulatory Authority, recently issued a joint statement to communicate their concerns and offer advice on how to avoid being deceived online.
They also issued guidelines to the public, the first of which is to make contributions exclusively to reputable and officially recognized charitable organizations.
People have been urged not to respond to donation requests received via phone calls, emails, or social media messages, especially those that employ pressure tactics or emotional manipulation to solicit funds. The goal is to ensure that unscrupulous individuals or groups do not take advantage of kind-hearted donors.
The authorities have set up a hotline number (33618627) where people can report any suspicious solicitation attempts. The authorities have also urged people to use the Metrash app to report such fraudulent activities.
By being vigilant and adhering to the guidelines, individuals can help ensure their donations reach legitimate causes and contribute positively to society.
