A recent survey by UK security training outfit ‘Get Licensed’ ranked Doha as the 10th safest city in the world for tourists.

The Qatar capital was tied with Ljubljana, Slovenia, after each city received a Global Holiday Safety Score of 7.56. It also recorded one of the lowest homicide rates globally — 0.42 per 100,000 people by country.

While 82.37% of the people surveyed said they felt safe to walk alone at night, only 8.94% said they were worried about being mugged or robbed. The city also had the safest ranking in the Global Terrorism Index score (zero), with a 7.92 score in the reliability of police category.

The cities were ranked using several safety factors as parameters, including crime and homicide rates, trust in police and worries about being mugged or robbed.

Reykjavik (Iceland), Bern (Switzerland), Bergen (Norway), Kyoto (Japan), Taipei (Taiwan), Singapore (Singapore), Copenhagen (Denmark), Salzburg (Austria) and Tokyo (Japan) were the cities that finished ahead of Doha.

Meanwhile Lagos (Nigeria), Lima (Peru), Mexico City (Mexico), New Delhi (India) and Manila (Philippines) were the least safe global tourist destinations.

Last year, Doha had been chosen by Holidu as the world’s 15th safest city for ‘solo women travellers.’ It was the only city in the region to be included among the 50-strong list.

Qatar’s tag as a safe destination has attracted a record number of tourists to the country in recent times. The country welcomed 730,000 visitors in January and February 2023, an increase of 347% from 2022.

The festivities and programmes surrounding Qatar Tourism’s Feel Winter in Qatar’ campaign helped drive tourists to Qatar in large numbers.

Qatar Live 2023 has also been holding major events and concerts in the country, with many more to come.

It also helped significantly that Doha was chosen as the Arab Tourism Capital of the year.

The country added another feather in its cap when the Hamad International Airport was chosen as the Middle East’s Best Airport by Skytrax for the ninth year in a row.

Away from tourism, Doha has also recently been chosen as one of the world’s top cities to live and work in.
