'East-West/West-East' artist Richard Serra passed away
Richard Serra, the acclaimed American artist known for his bold steel sculptures, has passed away at 85 due to pneumonia at his New York residence. Serra's influence extended globally, including iconic installations in Qatar such as "7" at the Museum of Islamic Art Park and "East-West/West-East" in the Brouq Nature Reserve.
In response, Qatar Museums Chairperson, H E Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, honored Serra's towering legacy, expressing condolences and acknowledging his lasting impact on the art world.
Recognizing Serra's mastery in crafting large-scale sculptures tailored for specific landscapes and architectural settings, Qatar Museums extended sympathies and highlighted collaborative projects like "7" and "East-West/West-East".
Commissioned by Qatar Museums based on the recommendation of architect I.M. Pei, Serra's "7" project offered audiences a distinctive sensory experience, independent of art knowledge, "East-West/West-East, brought art directly to the desert landscape, embodying Serra's desire for widespread engagement with his creations.
Throughout his six-decade career, Serra solidified his status as a preeminent figure in postwar American art, challenging viewers to actively engage with his evocative steel sculptures.
