FIFA Arab Cup set to return soon, says Qatari sports minister
Qatar’s Minister of Sports and Youth HE Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Thani, who is also Chairman of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup Local Organizing Committee, said the FIFA Arab Cup — held as a test event for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 — would soon return.
He said the FIFA Arab Cup would be organised in cooperation with FIFA and the Union of Arab Football Associations (UAFA).
“The tournament will be held next year, God willing, after completing some arrangements. The date, location, and hosting mechanism will be announced in the future. While I’m not the person authorised to talk about this tournament, it’ll be held again,” he said.
“Everyone aspires to see another Arab Cup like the one we saw in 2021 in Qatar, and any place where it’ll be held, it’ll be successful, God willing,” he added.
Qatar hosted the inaugural edition of the FIFA Arab Cup in 2021, a year before the Middle East and Arab world’s first-ever FIFA World Cup, and it was an outstanding success.
Sheikh Hamad also hailed the success of the ongoing AFC Asian Cup, saying crowd turnout and ticket sales for the event had exceeded all expectations.
He said a wide range of communities, especially Arabs, were contributing to the success of the 24-team event.
The Minister said tickets for Qatari and Palestinian matches were sold out even before the tournament, adding that the tournament’s quality had gone up significantly. He also praised the performance of teams like Jordan and Iraq, who have both qualified for the knockout rounds.
