Fire Station invites people to celebrate their first-ever Garangao night
The Doha Fire Station, one of the country’s premier institutions that help promote local artistic talents, will celebrate its first-ever Garangao night at its premises on April 4.
The event will run from 8pm to 11pm, it said on its Instagram channel.
“Join us on our first Garangao night at the Fire Station! Garangao is considered one of the most important Ramadan occasions in Qatar, where children knock on doors and collect nuts and sweets around their neighbourhood. Our activities include painting on tote bags, distributing sweets, henna, and more for people of all ages,” the social media post read.
The event will be held at the Fire Station’s Plaza, located opposite Al Bidda Park and near Hamad Medical City.
Garangao is usually celebrated on the 14th day of the holy month of Ramadan. It originated as a way to celebrate children as they attempted to fast. Families hand out Garangao – mixed bags of nuts, sweets, sugared kernels, and other candies to children in the neighbourhood.
Meanwhile, the Doha Fire Station said the submission deadline for the Open call for Artist in Residence 8 (2023-2024) is April 15.
The programme is open to all artistic disciplines for Qatari artists and artists residing in Qatar who are 21 or older and have a valid Qatari ID.
The initiative will run for nine months, from September 15 to June 15, 2024. During this time, artists will be provided a studio space at the Fire Station, which will provide them a chance to develop their artistic practices.
There will be opportunities to network, seek mentorship, collaborate with curators and visiting critics, open studios, and access to the building’s woodshop and fabrication lab.
