The first-ever edition of the Ramadan Book Fair, which was being organized by the Ministry of Culture at Souq Waqif, is going to conclude today. It started off as a nine-day-long event held in the Western square of the Souq and witnessed a series of art workshops, seminars, and children’s workshops.

The Ramadan Book Fair was held by the Ministry to coincide with the Holy month and promote a culture of reading in the country. With several religious books available for the public to browse through, the book fair is meant to enhance the cultural literacy and diversity of the country. So far, the number of visitors dropping by each day point toward a successful first edition.

The Book fair also received several important dignitaries such as the Ambassador of Iraq to Qatar, H E Omar al Barzanji, and the Ambassador of Turkey H E Mustafa Goksu as they toured the whole fair and visited multiple kiosks.

This first edition of the book fair was strategically placed at Souq Waqif since it receives a large volume of visitors each day. The Head of the Technical Committee at the fair, Abdulrahman Al Hitmi attributes the success of the Ramadan Book Fair to this very fact.

Apart from the kiosks that sell religious books, the fair also included a display of historical books and manuscripts that dated back over 300 years ago. These were from the Abdul Aziz Al Bohashem Al Sayed Library for Heritage Books. While most books available were in Arabic, the fair also featured several titles in English and French as well.

The focus on building literacy among the younger generation was also a major motive of the book fair and hence multiple children’s workshops were also held. The children’s theatre and daily competitions will also continue to happen even today on the last day.

Organized by the Ministry of Culture, the Ramadan Book Fair is represented by Qatar Cultural and Heritage Events and is open to the public from 8 pm till midnight.
