The country is gearing up in right earnest for one of Ramadan’s most beloved customs for children — Garangao night — usually held on the 14th day of the Holy month.

Qatar’s Ministry of Municipality (MoM) is readying its different municipalities to hold a number of activities to mark the special occasion.

While the Doha Municipality will hold an event on Saturday, from 8pm at the New Salata Park for the general public, a similar event by the Al Rayan Municipality will be held at the Family Zone area of Expo 2023 Doha from 8.30pm.

Al Khor and Al Zakhira Municipalities will organise Garangao activities on Sunday at 8pm at the Ain Hleitan Souq in Al Khor.

Garangao, unique to Qatar and the Gulf region, allows children to go from house to house collecting sweets and goodies from neighbors. Adults treat children with goodies and in addition to engaging them in educational and creative activities.

The Garangao Market event, organized by Qatar’s Ministry of Culture, is currently underway at the Darb Al Saai headquarters in Umm Salal.

The market, which runs through Sunday, aims to maintain Qatari legacy, traditions, and customs during the holy month of Ramadan.

To ensure the health and safety of people, different municipalities and their health monitoring units have intensified inspection campaigns on outlets selling Garangao-related items like nuts and sweets.

Children celebrate the event on the 14th day of Ramadan, having fasted for half of the holy month.

The night celebration of Garangao is believed to have its origins in the tradition of pearl diving. Children are adorned in traditional Qatari clothes, chant special songs of Garangao, and walk around their neighborhoods collecting candy, nuts, and chocolates from their elders.
