HH The Amir attends Cairo Summit of Peace, joins leaders to call for ‘de-escalation’ in Gaza
HH The Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, along with numerous world leaders, took part in the Cairo Summit of Peace in Egypt on Saturday.
HH The Amir was accompanied by Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani and several other senior officials. HH The Amir left Cairo later left Cairo after the meeting.
Representatives from countries including Jordan, France, Germany, Russia, China, the United Kingdom, USA and South Africa attended the one-day meeting, together with United Nations and European Union officials.
In his opening remarks, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi invited leaders to come to an agreement for a road map to end the humanitarian disaster in the Gaza Strip.
He also called for a revival of peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians. The road map’s goals included the delivery of aid to Gaza and agreeing a ceasefire, followed by negotiations leading to a two-state solution, he said.
“All civilian lives matter,” said Jordan’s King Abdullah, while addressing the summit.
“The relentless bombing campaign under way in Gaza as we speak is cruel and unconscionable on every level. It’s collective punishment of a besieged and helpless people. It’s a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law. It’s a war crime,” he said.
“Anywhere else, attacking civilian infrastructure and deliberately starving an entire population of food, water, electricity and basic necessities would be condemned. Accountability would be enforced … but not in Gaza,” he added.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who attended the summit, asked for humanitarian corridors to be opened.
