HH The Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani attended the ceremony to honour winners of the eighth Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani International Anti-Corruption Excellence Award at the National Conference and Convention Center in San Jose, Costa Rica, on Tuesday.

The ceremony for the Awards, constituted in cooperation with the United Nations, was held in the presence of Costa Rica’s First Vice President Stephan Brunner Neibig.

HH The Amir, along with Neibig, watched a documentary film about the history of the prestigious award. They also watched a film about the competitors and winners, highlighting their achievements in their respective fields.

Several videos, showcasing efforts to promote and enhance transparency and combat corruption, were also shown.

Sheikh Tamim and Neibig then gave away the awards to the winners. They presented the Lifetime or Outstanding Achievement Award for Excellence in Anti-Corruption to Dr Muna Buchahin.

The Academic Research and Education in Anti-Corruption Award was jointly given to Professor Robert Klitgaard and Professor Alberto Vannucci.

Dr Rodrigo Arias Grillo and Professor Elias Bantekas jointly won the award for Safeguarding Sports from Corruption. The Innovation or Investigative Journalism in Anti-Corruption Award was presented to Khadija Sharife.

The Youth Creativity and Engagement in Anti-Corruption Award was jointly awarded to Gayo James Mpuya and the Mejor Mexico organization.

United Nations’ Assistant Secretary-General for Rule of Law and Security Institutions Alexander Zouev, and UN Special Advocate for the Prevention of Corruption Dr Ali bin Fetais Al Marri, each delivered speeches.

Earlier, HH The Amir and Costa Rican President Rodrigo Chaves unveiled the Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani Anti-Corruption Excellence Award monument in Parque Espana, San Jose.

The occasion was attended by Their Excellencies members of the official delegation accompanying HH The Amir, a number of members of the High-Level Award Committee, and the award’s Assessment Advisory Board.
