HH The Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani left Doha for an official visit to Cyprus on Monday afternoon.

Sheikh Tamim, who is accompanied by an official delegation, will land in the Cypriot capital city of Nicosia later in the day. It will be followed by a state visit to Greece. He is undertaking the trips at the invitation of the two countries’ leaders.

During the visits, Sheikh Tamim will hold discussions with the Presidents and other senior officials from the two friendly nations on ways to enhance co-operation between them, in addition to exchanging views on various regional and international issues of common concern.

Cyprus’s Ambassador to Qatar Nicholas Manols said HH The Amir’s visit to his home nation underlined the depth of friendship between the two countries.

“This visit is very important as it’s taking place just six months after Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides visited Qatar,” he said.

“HH The Amir’s visit will give a significant boost to relations between the two countries. The first round of political consultations was convened in Cyprus in January, with the aim of bolstering friendship between the two countries,” said Qatar’s Ambassador to Cyprus Ali Yousef Abdulrahman Al Mulla.

“The visit opens broader horizons for relations between the two countries and will see the beginning of a new phase of economic co-operation. The visit is expected to bring about a qualitative shift in bilateral relations at all levels. Both nations are keen to further enhance their friendly ties,” he added.

While the Cypriot embassy in Doha opened in 2004, the Qatari embassy in Nicosia became the first by a Gulf nation to start functioning in the country (in 2007).

The construction sector is witnessing remarkable growth between the two sides, as Cypriot companies have contributed to building and constructing many major infrastructure projects in Qatar, the most important of which is Qatar Foundation’s Education City Stadium.

Qatar Airways is also operating 14 flights per week in the summer from Larnaca International Airport, and seven flights per week in the winter.

In December 2021, a consortium consisting of QatarEnergy and ExxonMobil signed a contract with the government of Cyprus for exploration and production sharing in block five, located southeast of the island of Cyprus.

There is also cultural and educational cooperation between Qatar and Cyprus. The most prominent of this is achieving full recognition between universities and institutes in the two countries, especially since Qatar recognizes the University of Cyprus and the Cyprus Institute of Technology. In addition, many intellectuals from both sides participate in seminars and exhibitions.
