HMC performs successful kidney transplant from young Qatari man to his father
Qatar’s Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has been doing great work in improving the medical infrastructure and services in the country.
The HMC’s kidney transplantation unit recently performed a successful surgery — involving a young Qatari man and his father.
Following extensive tests to ensure the patient’s tissue compatibility and kidney suitability, the son’s donated kidney was successfully transplanted to the father.
Abdullah Al Ali, the donor, decided to give the kidney to his father after the latter suffered from kidney failure. He had also undergone an unsuccessful kidney transplant operation outside Qatar many years ago.
“We were determined to carry out the kidney transplant at HMC as it has a high rate of success in organ transplantation surgeries. Despite receiving approval for treatment abroad, we decided to go with HMC due to its significant success rate. My father underwent two years of dialysis following an unsuccessful surgery abroad. HMC reaffirmed our faith by successfully conducting the operation on October 15,” said Abdullah.
“My goal was to alleviate my father’s pain and end the suffering caused by dialysis and disease complications. I was prepared to donate my kidney to him. I thank HMC’s doctors and other team members in different departments who supervised my father’s and my health until we recovered,” added Abdullah.
Hamad General Hospital’s Medical Director Dr Yousef Al Maslamani, who is also Director of Qatar Center for Organ Transplantation, attributed the surgery’s success to the collaborative efforts of medical staff from different departments and advancement of Qatar’s medical technology.
“HMC’s organ transplantation programme continues to thrive, with 54 kidney transplant surgeries performed for patients of various age groups since the beginning of 2023 until October,” said Dr Al Maslamani.
“This includes 30 kidneys from living donors and 24 from brain-dead ones, marking a significant milestone in the programme’s history. We initially had aimed for 50 kidney transplant this year, but the programme surpassed the target early due to an increase in the number of living and brain-dead organ donors. We also conducted seven liver transplant and three lung transplant surgeries,” he added.
He highlighted the continuous development and expansion of HMC’s kidney transplant programme, attributing it to the integration of modern technologies and the proficiency of the medical staff overseeing the programme.
He said patients underwent standard tests before surgery to ensure that all donation criteria are met and to protect the donor's health.
“In 2022, 41 kidneys were transplanted with a 100% success rate. It included 25 transplants from living donors and 16 from brain-dead donors, averaging one operation per week,” said Dr Al Maslamani.
HMC implements a range of organ transplantation programmes, including kidney, liver, and lungs. State-of-the-art equipment and medical facilities are used to deliver high-quality care for all patients.
